Metabolic Regulation and Obesity
Signal Transduction/Hormone Action
Category(ies) of Research:
Descriptor of Research:
Our research investigates the etiology and pathophysiology of abnormal lipid metabolism, a common link between obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, using human molecular genetics based methods. We are particularly interested in identifying and functionally characterizing CD36 (fatty acid transporter gene) genetic variants that contribute to individual differences in lipid processing and susceptibility to the metabolic syndrome. Our ultimate goal is to determine the clinical utility of biologically relevant genetic variants in metabolic disease risk stratification and patient management for the improvement of long-term health.
