We are interested in the fundamental properties of large-conductance calcium-activated BK-type potassium channels, which are abundantly expressed in pancreatic beta cells. Beta cell BK channels exhibit a inactivation mediated by an auxiliary beta2 subunit. It is increasingly recognized that such BK channels are intimately coupled to Cav1.3 calcium channels and play a critical role in driving pacemaker electrical activity in many cell types, a process likely to be fundamental to regulation of insulin secretion.
