Descriptor of Research:
We are interested in the mechanisms involved in the increased prevalence of urinary tract infection (UTI) in diabetics. To address this issue, we have developed a diabetic mouse model of UTI and are comparing differences in UTI pathogenesis between diabetic and non-diabetic mice in various genetic backgrounds. We have found, in collaboration with Dr. Joel Schilling, an increase in UPEC colonization and resulting inflammation in the kidneys in a pre-diabetic model.
