Prevention and Control Core

The Prevention and Control Core supports investigators in the conduct of research that 1) translates diabetes knowledge and advances established in controlled settings, to 'real world' clinical or community settings, and (2) disseminates these innovations to the population at large.

The P&C provides four consultative services to investigators:

1) Research design and analyses of data. Services to investigators include consultation and assistance with:
  • Epidemiologic expertise related to study design of intervention trials, observational, cohort, and case control studies;
  • Use of qualitative methods;
  • Advanced quantitative methods such as hierarchical linear modeling, survival and health outcomes analyses;
  • Use of geographic information systems (GIS) analysis for spatial analysis applications.

2) Recruiting participants with and without diabetes for research. Services to investigators include consultation and assistance with:

  • Subject recruitment to clinical and/or community studies;
  • Design of a recruitment plan that utilizes established databases and community partnerships;
  • Design of novel strategies tailored to unique characteristics of the study population;
  • Usage of Diabetes Connections, a web based recruitment program which is a resource for well-characterized subjects for diabetes and metabolic studies.

3) Measurement and evaluation. Services to investigators include consultation and assistance with:

  • Identifying, developing or validating measures to suit specific research needs;
  • Access to web-based catalogue of standard psychosocial and behavioral measures (More information);
  • Identifying relevant types of diabetes instruments including:
      • survey measures;
      • Measures of dissemination including reach, adoption, implementation, and maintenance;
      • behavioral assessments;
      • qualitative instruments;
      • sociocultural measures;
      • community and environmental measures;
      • computer tailored assessments;
      • health policy analysis and evaluation instruments;
  • Delivery methods such as:
      • CATI (computer assisted telephone interviewing) data collection;
      • Online measures development and assessment;
  • Data management of datasets from diverse sources.
4) Designing interventions for dissemination. Services to investigators include consultation and assistance with:
  • Development, standardization, and implementation of theory-driven interventions;
  • Design of clinical self management protocols;
  • Application of community based research methods;
  • Development of tailored health communication interventions;
  • Health policy design and analyses.
