Prevention & Control Component

Overview

The Washington University Medical School (WUMS) and the Saint Louis University School of Public Health (SLU-SPH) have combined their resources and expertise in organizing the DRTC Prevention and Control Core (WUMS-P&C).

The goal of the WUMS-P&C Core, consistent with the charge of NIDDK, is

  • to support research that translates diabetes knowledge and advances established in controlled settings, to ‘real world’ clinical or community settings, and
  • to overcome barriers in disseminating innovations to the population at large.

The WUMS-P&C Core is uniquely positioned to address this challenge through an extensive consortium of complimentary scientific and community resources, services, and expertise, the product of a longstanding partnership between WUMS and SLU-SPH. Translational researchers have access to expertise from WUMS, internationally recognized for its history of diabetes translational research advances, and SLU, home to the only accredited school of public health in the region and nationally recognized for its stated mission to promote translation and dissemination science with underserved populations.

The WUMS-P&C Core provides the organizational framework for bringing together the distinctive but complimentary scientific expertise necessary to understand the interacting factors and test innovative strategies that will result in significant improvements in the prevention and control of diabetes in diverse populations.

The result is a dynamic environment that fosters transdisciplinary collaborations, catalyzes new ideas, and ensures support for researchers in addressing the complex, multilevel, and translational challenges which exist with real-world patients, health systems, and communities.
