Each year in late spring our P&F Program issues a call for proposals. During the 2011 round of competition, we received 20 applications from faculty in 8 different departments at Washington University School of Medicine. Following review by external experts, five outstanding new projects were chosen for funding:

  1. Abhinav Diwan M.D.
"Intermittent Fasting as a Strategy to Treat Diabetes"
  2. Jeffrey Henderson, M.D., Ph.D.
"Identification of metabolic factors predisposing to diabetes-associated infection"
  3. Irfan Lodhi, Ph.D.
"Regulation of adipose tissue development and metabolic homeostasis"
  4. Laura Palanker Musselman, Ph.D.
"The roles of nuclear hormone receptor signaling in a Drosophila model of diet-induced type 2 diabetes"
  5. Xiong Su, Ph.D.
"Adipocyte-derived Exosomes: Regulation and Metabolic Functions"

Please acknowledge the Washington University DRTC in your publications as follows: "Supported by DRTC, Grant No. P60 DK020579"

The Diabetes Centers Program at NIDDK will no longer offer both Diabetes Research Training Center (DRTC, P60) grants and Diabetes Endocrine Research Center Grants (DERC, P30).  Instead, NIDDK now offers Diabetes Research Center Grants (DRC, P30) and a new, distinct program for centers for Diabetes Translation Research (CDTR). CDTRs are specifically designed for T3 translation work, expanding upon the previous Prevention & Control Programs of the DRTCs.

Congratulations to Debra Haire Joshu and collegues who were recently awarded one of seven new CDTRs. Click here for more information.

The Washington University DRTC is now preparing its 5-year competitive renewal. Given the change in the NIDDK program, we will be applying for a DRC (P30) in order to fund the next cycle for our six biomedical cores, Pilot & Feasibility Program, and Enrichment Program. We look forward to working with our members on this effort.
